The Department of Fisheries is researching genetic methods to control Blackchin Tilapia populations by inducing tetraploid chromosomes in males. These fish will breed with diploid females, producing sterile offspring to prevent overpopulation. Researchers are refining techniques and conducting breeding trials, aiming for large-scale deployment by March 2025.

The Department of Fisheries is advancing research on genetic methods to regulate Blackchin Tilapia populations, with Director-General Bancha Sukkaew visiting the Phetchaburi Aquatic Animal Genetics Research and Development Center to assess progress. The project focuses on inducing a tetraploid (4n) chromosome set in male Blackchin Tilapia. When released into natural water bodies, these fish will mate with diploid (2n) females, producing sterile triploid (3n) offspring to prevent uncontrolled reproduction.

Scientists have used thermal shock treatment on fertilized eggs to induce the 4n chromosome set, successfully producing over 1,100 juvenile fish. Of these, 703 specimens have been tagged, and chromosome analysis has confirmed 20 sample groups as tetraploid. Researchers are working to complete verification by March 2025 while refining induction techniques to improve efficiency. The goal is to ensure sufficient 4n fish for large-scale deployment in natural habitats.

Controlled breeding trials are also being conducted to assess the compatibility of 4n males with naturally occurring 2n females. These trials assess pairing success, mating competitiveness, and the overall effectiveness of this approach in controlling population growth. Findings will indicate whether this method can be a viable solution for managing wild populations.

If successful, this method could provide a long-term strategy to control Blackchin Tilapia numbers and prevent ecological imbalances caused by overpopulation.
