Abstract

The Middle East conflict has driven liquefied natural gas (LNG) prices up over 91%, reaching USD 20.5 per million BTU due to production disruptions affecting 3% of global supply. Key energy infrastructure, notably Qatar’s Ras Laffan gas field, has sustained damage, and recovery will take 3–5 years. Thailand, reliant on imported LNG, faces rising electricity costs, potentially reaching THB 4.9 per unit by 2026. The government may need to stabilize tariffs and promote clean energy to manage costs effectively and enhance energy security. Households and businesses should adopt energy efficiency measures and consider rooftop solar solutions.

Summary

Rising LNG Prices Due to Middle East Conflict

The ongoing conflict in the Middle East has sharply increased liquefied natural gas (LNG) prices by over 91%, rising from USD 10.7 per million BTU to USD 20.5. This surge results from concerns about supply disruptions, particularly through the Strait of Hormuz, and the damage inflicted on Qatar’s Ras Laffan gas field, reducing production capacity by approximately 17%. With global LNG supply curtailed by 3% and recovery expected to take 3–5 years, elevated prices are likely to persist despite ceasefire negotiations.

Impact on Electricity Costs in Thailand

As LNG prices rise, electricity generation costs in Thailand are also increasing. Imported LNG prices directly impact domestic natural gas costs, and disruptions in shipments force Thailand to procure gas at higher spot market prices. If the current trend continues, electricity tariffs could reach THB 4.9 per unit by 2026. However, if the government maintains financial support for electricity tariffs, this may alleviate some cost pressures.

Long-term Energy Restructuring Strategies

To address these rising costs, the government should adopt immediate and systematic measures, focusing on transitioning to clean energy sources. This includes enhancing energy efficiency, investing in renewable energy, and exploring small modular nuclear reactors. Households and businesses should adapt by improving electricity-use efficiency and considering rooftop solar systems. Implementing these strategies will be crucial for reducing dependence on LNG and ensuring long-term energy security for Thailand.
