Thailand has updated its visa-free entry and visa privilege rules for 2026 after the Cabinet approved the cancellation of the 60-day visa-free scheme for 93 countries and territories.

Key Points

Thailand has revised its visa-free entry and Visa on Arrival rules for 2026 after canceling the 60-day visa-free scheme for 93 countries and territories. The changes are intended to simplify entry categories, reduce confusion, and make Thailand’s immigration rules easier to understand.

The new policy follows a “one country, one Thai visa exemption privilege” approach. Officials say it is meant to create more consistent standards for travelers while streamlining procedures and supporting smoother entry into the country.

The Department of Consular Affairs under the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the Cabinet approved the revised visa exemption and Visa on Arrival measures on May 19, 2026, as part of a wider effort to reorganise Thailand’s visa categories and reduce confusion over entry privileges. The changes are intended to make the system clearer for travellers, streamline entry procedures, and ensure that visa rules are easier to understand and apply. Officials said the review forms part of a broader policy update aimed at improving consistency across Thailand’s immigration framework and supporting smoother travel into the country.

Why the 60-day scheme is being cancelled

The 60-day visa-free program was launched to boost tourism and the economy, but it was later reassessed amid worries about security, illegal employment, nominee companies and cross-border crime.

Tourism and Sports Minister Surasak Phancharoenworakul earlier said Thailand would restore previous visa rules for affected countries, with most returning to stays of around 30 days. He said the review would take both security and economic considerations into account, with the focus shifting from visitor numbers alone to “quality tourists” who stay longer, spend more, and contribute more sustainably to the economy. The move is aimed at balancing easier travel access with stronger oversight, while supporting tourism growth in a way that better aligns with the country’s broader priorities.

One country, one visa privilege

The revised system is based on the principle of “one country, one Thai visa exemption privilege”, aimed at creating clearer and more consistent standards for foreign travellers. This initiative is designed not only to streamline the process for visitors, but also to make entry procedures easier to understand and more predictable from one nationality to another.

By establishing a uniform visa policy, the government hopes to reduce confusion among travellers about whether they qualify for visa exemptions, how long they may stay, and what conditions apply. In turn, this could encourage more tourists to explore Thailand’s rich culture, stunning landscapes, vibrant cities, and diverse attractions with greater confidence and less administrative hassle. Additionally, this reform aligns with global practices that seek to facilitate tourism, support smoother international travel, and strengthen the country’s competitiveness as a destination while still ensuring that security measures are upheld.
