Abstract
The steel industry must alter production methods to reduce GHG emissions and work towards carbon-neutral manufacturing to mitigate environmental impacts. Sweden is investing in decarbonizing technology, such as the HYBRIT process to produce green steel. Luxemburg steel maker ArcelorMittal is utilizing a Carbon Capture and Utilization (CCU) facility to capture CO2 and convert it into advanced ethanol called “Steelanon.” Advanced technology adoption in Thailand, collaboration, and support from the government are crucial to achieve lower carbon emissions and increased green steel production and demand.
Summary
## The Push for Carbon-Neutral Steel Production
The steel industry is a major contributor to greenhouse gas emissions, prompting the urgent need for changes in production methods to mitigate environmental impact. Steel producers worldwide are striving to reduce emissions to achieve carbon-neutral manufacturing, with countries like Sweden making significant progress in this area. The Hydrogen Breakthrough Ironmaking Technology (HYBRIT) is one method being used to produce green steel, while ArcelorMittal is utilizing a Carbon Capture and Utilization (CCU) facility to convert CO2 into advanced ethanol. The demand for green steel is rapidly increasing in various manufacturing sectors, including construction, appliances, and vehicles.
## Challenges and Solutions for the Steel Industry in Thailand
While advanced technology adoption to enhance the steel industry in Thailand is on the horizon, collaboration between steel producers and government support is vital. Despite the high investment required for green technologies, efforts to lower emissions in the domestic steel sector should be a priority. Thailand must work toward setting emission targets, developing tools for specific emission assessments, and implementing regulations for the steel industry. Cooperation with the nation’s steel sector association and investment in renewable energy production will be critical in achieving carbon-neutrality.
## Commitment to Carbon-Neutrality and Advanced Technology Adoption
Demonstrating a commitment to carbon-neutrality and investment in advanced technology adoption will be crucial for the Thai steel industry. By embracing green energy production and closely monitoring emissions, the industry can take the first steps toward achieving its goal of carbon-neutrality.
